The Challenge

Verdant Skin had a customer retention problem hiding behind decent overall growth: new customer acquisition was strong, but 71% of customers never placed a second order. Their acquisition cost kept climbing as ad platforms got more expensive, while their most valuable growth lever – getting existing customers to come back – sat completely untapped.

They’d looked at loyalty apps before and found the same issue every time: generic points-for-purchases programs that felt bolted onto the store, didn’t reflect their brand voice, and offered rewards (mostly just percentage-off codes) that didn’t build any real emotional connection to the brand.

Their founder wanted something that felt like an extension of the product experience, not a discount mechanism wearing a loyalty-program costume.

Our Approach

We designed the program around behaviours worth rewarding, not just spend: referrals, reviews, subscription sign-ups, and social shares earned points alongside purchases – reinforcing every action that actually drives long-term value, not just immediate transactions.

We built a three-tier structure (Bloom, Radiant, Verdant Circle) with tier-specific perks that escalated in a way that felt genuinely earned – early access to launches, a birthday gift, free shipping thresholds that lowered by tier, and for the top tier, a direct line to the founder’s product development feedback sessions.

Rather than a generic points-and-rewards app, we built the program logic natively into Shopify with a custom rewards engine, giving Verdant full control over point-earning rules, redemption logic, and tier calculation – and full ownership of the loyalty data.

What We Built

  • Custom-built tiered loyalty program (Bloom / Radiant / Verdant Circle) integrated natively into Shopify checkout and account pages
  • Points-earning logic covering purchases, reviews, referrals, subscription activation, birthday, and social engagement
  • Automated tier progression and downgrade logic based on rolling 12-month spend, with proactive “you’re close to the next tier” nudges
  • Branded rewards dashboard embedded in the customer account page – fully styled to match the storefront rather than a generic widget
  • Referral engine with unique shareable codes, dual-sided rewards, and fraud-prevention logic to prevent self-referral abuse
  • Klaviyo integration for tier-based email and SMS flows: welcome series, points-expiry reminders, tier-up celebrations, win-back offers
  • Birthday and anniversary reward automation triggered via Shopify Flow
  • Loyalty analytics dashboard tracking enrollment rate, tier distribution, redemption rate, and member vs. non-member LTV

“We didn’t want a program that felt like a coupon generator. We wanted something that made our best customers feel like insiders. Within a couple of months our top tier became a genuine community – people reply to our emails about it. That’s not something a generic points app was ever going to give us.”

– Founder, Verdant Skin

Key Takeaway

Loyalty programs succeed or fail on whether the rewards feel earned and the brand experience stays intact – not on how many points-per-dollar a customer accrues. A native, brand-aligned rewards engine turns retention from a metric you track into a growth channel you can actively design, market, and improve.
