The Challenge

Fernbrook Goods sold genuinely sustainably-manufactured home products, but faced a credibility problem shared by nearly every brand in the space: “eco-friendly” and “sustainable” had become such overused, vague marketing terms that increasingly skeptical customers had started discounting the claims entirely, regardless of whether they were true.

Customer research revealed the issue precisely: shoppers wanted specifics, not adjectives. “Sustainable materials” meant nothing without a number attached. Competitors making far weaker environmental commitments were using identical language, making it genuinely difficult for a customer to distinguish real substance from greenwashing without doing independent research.

Fernbrook’s founder had the data to back up genuine claims – verified supply chain carbon data, real material sourcing information – but no way to surface any of it at the point that actually mattered: while a customer was deciding whether to buy.

Our Approach

We built a carbon-transparency layer directly into the shopping experience, surfacing per-product and per-order estimated carbon footprint data (sourced from Fernbrook’s verified supply chain data and a third-party carbon calculation methodology) at the product page and checkout – not buried in a separate sustainability report page nobody reads.

Rather than a vague sustainability badge, every product page showed a specific footprint estimate with a breakdown by category (materials, manufacturing, shipping), giving customers the concrete numbers our research showed they actually wanted.

At checkout, customers could see their order’s estimated footprint and opt to fund a verified carbon offset for that specific order through a vetted offset partner – turning an abstract value statement into a concrete, opt-in action taken at the moment of purchase.

What We Built

  • Per-product carbon footprint calculation and display, broken down by materials, manufacturing, and shipping – sourced from verified supply chain data
  • Checkout-integrated offset opt-in: customers see their order’s specific estimated footprint and can fund a verified offset in one click via a vetted partner
  • Supply chain transparency pages per product: sourcing origin, materials, and manufacturing process, linked directly from product pages
  • Post-purchase “impact report” email showing the cumulative footprint and offsets funded by that individual customer over time
  • Aggregate brand-level impact dashboard published publicly, updated in real time as orders and offsets accrue
  • Third-party carbon calculation methodology integration, with methodology transparency published rather than treated as a black box
  • Packaging and shipping footprint optimization surfaced as a customer-facing metric, tied to actual logistics changes Fernbrook made
  • Email flow highlighting cumulative personal impact, designed to build long-term engagement without greenwashing tone

“We had the real data the whole time – verified sourcing, actual carbon numbers – we just weren’t showing anyone. Putting the actual number on the product page instead of another green leaf icon changed how customers talked about us. People started sharing their impact emails on social media unprompted. That’s not something you can buy with an ad budget.”

– Founder, Fernbrook Goods

Key Takeaway

In a market saturated with vague sustainability marketing, specificity is the differentiator. Customers are not rejecting sustainability claims – they’re rejecting unverifiable ones. Surfacing real, specific environmental data at the point of purchase, with a genuine opt-in action attached, turns sustainability from a brand-messaging exercise into a trust-building, conversion-driving feature that competitors making vaguer claims genuinely cannot replicate.
