The Challenge
FormLab Studio makes made-to-order modular furniture: sofas, shelving systems, and dining tables configured by customers across dimensions, materials, leg finishes, upholstery grades, and assembly combinations – resulting in up to 40,000 possible variations per product line
Every ecommerce consultant they spoke to told them the same thing: “Shopify can’t do this. Use a custom-built platform.” They were three weeks from signing a €180,000 contract for a bespoke ecommerce platform build when a referral brought them to eBizTrait.
Our answer was different: Shopify Plus can do this – but not with standard Shopify product variants, theme sections, or any existing app. It requires custom development at the infrastructure level. We proposed building a configurator engine that lived within Shopify’s architecture but operated entirely outside its standard variant limitations.
Our Approach
The core challenge was Shopify’s native variant limit of 100 variants per product – a ceiling FormLab would hit in the first configuration step alone. Our solution used a combination of Shopify Metafields as the data layer, a custom JavaScript configurator as the front-end engine, and the Storefront API to build valid cart line items with custom attributes representing each configuration choice.
The result: unlimited configuration depth, real-time price calculation, 3D material preview (WebGL), and a cart system that passed complete build specifications to both Shopify and FormLab’s production management system.
What We Built
- Custom JavaScript configurator engine: step-by-step configuration UI with real-time price calculation, compatibility rules, and availability gating
- WebGL-powered 3D material preview: customers see their configuration rendered in real time with accurate material textures and finish representations
- Shopify Metafields architecture: all configuration options, compatibility matrices, and pricing rules stored as Shopify Metafields – fully manageable from Admin
- Storefront API integration: custom cart line item builder passing full build specs as structured attributes through to order and to productionn
- Shopify Admin custom app: internal tool for managing configurator rules, pricing matrices, material availability, and lead times
- ERP integration: every Shopify order containing a configuration automatically creates a production order in FormLab’s manufacturing system
- Lead time engine: configuration-aware delivery date calculator surfaced at product and cart level
- Multi-language and multi-currency (DE, AT, CH) built into the core architecture

“We were told Shopify couldn’t do what we needed. eBizTrait proved that wrong. The configurator isn’t just a feature – it is our business online. Customers spend twelve minutes with it before they buy. That’s twelve minutes of engaged, considered purchasing. Our showroom can’t scale like that. The website can.”

Key Takeaway
Custom Shopify development is the discipline of making Shopify do things it wasn’t designed to do out of the box – and doing them with the reliability, performance, and maintainability of a properly engineered system. FormLab’s case shows what’s possible when the engineering brief is approached without compromise and without the assumption that Shopify has a ceiling.
