The Challenge

Larkspur Home sold mid-to-large furniture pieces – sofas, sideboards, dining tables – where the single biggest source of customer hesitation, and the single biggest driver of returns, was the same question every time: “will this actually fit, and will it look right in my space?” Product photography, no matter how well-lit, couldn’t answer that.

Their return rate on large furniture items sat at 22%, with “didn’t look how I expected” and “too big/small for the space” cited as the top two reasons – both problems a customer could have caught before purchase, if they’d had a way to actually see the piece in their own room.

Competitors were beginning to roll out AR try-on experiences, and Larkspur’s leadership worried, correctly, that this was becoming a baseline expectation for furniture ecommerce rather than a novelty – a brand without it would start to look behind, not just miss an opportunity.

Our Approach

We built an AR and 3D visualization pipeline using Shopify’s native AR Quick Look and Model Viewer support, combined with a structured 3D asset production process – because the AR experience is only as good as the accuracy of the underlying 3D model, and inaccurate models create returns rather than preventing them.

We established a repeatable 3D modeling pipeline (photogrammetry for existing SKUs, CAD-derived models for new product lines going forward) to keep asset production costs sustainable as Larkspur’s catalog grew, rather than treating each model as a one-off custom project.

The AR experience was designed to work seamlessly on both iOS (AR Quick Look) and Android (Scene Viewer) directly from the product page, with a graceful 3D-rotation fallback for desktop and older devices – so no customer segment was left with a broken or absent experience.

What We Built

  • Shopify-native AR Quick Look (iOS) and Scene Viewer (Android) integration triggered directly from product pages, no app download required
  • 3D model production pipeline: photogrammetry-based capture for 140 existing SKUs, CAD-to-web-optimized-GLB workflow for new products
  • Interactive desktop 3D viewer with drag-to-rotate and material/finish swapping for products with multiple upholstery options
  • True-to-scale AR placement allowing customers to view furniture at accurate real-world dimensions in their own space via smartphone camera
  • “Room preview” gallery feature showing each product pre-rendered in several styled room settings for customers without AR-capable devices
  • Product page redesign highlighting the AR feature prominently, with usage guidance to drive adoption rather than burying it as a small icon
  • Performance optimization ensuring 3D/AR assets loaded without degrading core page speed – lazy-loaded and compressed GLB/USDZ formats
  • Post-purchase survey tooling specifically tracking AR usage correlation with purchase confidence and return likelihood

“The number one email we used to get was some version of ‘I didn’t realize it would be that big.’ AR basically solved that question before it became a return. Customers walk into the purchase already knowing exactly how it’s going to look in their living room, because they’ve already seen it there.”

– Head of Ecommerce, Larkspur Home

Key Takeaway

For categories where scale, fit, and visual context genuinely determine purchase satisfaction – furniture, home goods, large decor – AR and 3D visualization isn’t a gimmick, it’s a direct answer to the objection that drives both hesitation and returns. The investment in accurate 3D assets pays for itself in reduced reverse logistics costs alone, before counting the conversion lift.
